Crafting with Compassion - Neat and Tangled Challenge

Good morning! These days I'm usually SOOO busy keeping up with all my Design Team work, that I rarely have a chance to play along with challenges. In my early days of cardmaking I LOVED joining challenges - they helped grow me in my cardmaking in so many ways! So I kind of have a special place in my heart for them. Recently, however, I saw a challenge that I knew I needed to play along with!

Neat and Tangled is hosting a "Crafting with Compassion" Challenge - a challenge all about helping others. It's a chance to combine cardmaking with supporting a charity or cause that is near and dear to your heart. If you know me, you know why I couldn't resist playing along with this one!

I'm going to tell you a little bit about an AMAZING ministry called Sister Connection. It is a SUPER long story - so I'll keep it a bit brief (you can always read more HERE if you're interested). If you've ever wondered about my blog name, Houses Built of Cards, here is how my blog got it's name:

When I began making cards several years ago (before I started my blog), I quickly started to see cards piling up more quickly than I could use or send them. I went to one craft fair, and paid more for my table than I sold in the day. About this time, a woman from Sister Connection came to our church, and told stories of the women and children in Burundi, Africa that had been left widows and orphans in the aftermath of the civil war there that killed an enormous number of the men in the country. Many of the widows had taken in additional children, and were also homeless. There were opportunities to sponsor the widows and their families on a monthly basis (which we did) - as well as chances to build homes for them at the staggeringly low price of $500 (over the years this has increased to $650 - but still, WOW!). My young daughters were particularly taken with the stories they heard, and it wasn't long until the idea hit me to sell my cards by donation toward building houses in Burundi. And just like that, when I started my blog, the name was born! It has been an incredibly humbling and amazing thing to watch how God has used this ministry - seriously! I haven't kept a complete count - I know the early years were a little slow starting. But by 2016 I was able to send in money in one year to build 4 homes - and this year I have already received enough from the purchase of my cards for THREE homes! I don't have words to say what an amazing blessing it is to be able to give in this small way.

You can find all the info on the challenge HERE on the Neat and Tangled Blog:

For my card to share for the challenge, I used a mix of MANY different Neat and Tangled Sets! I started off with two colors of Distress Oxide ink and the Hexastar Stencil to create a background.

I then stamped, colored, and die cut images from Wild Ones and Lumberjack Love to create my scene, mounting it all with foam adhesive. I added a sentiment using a combination of Itty Bitty Welcoming Committee and Wild Ones.

Beautiful Gold Terrarium - Simon Says Stamp Friendly Frolic Release

Hello! Stopping by tonight to let you know there is a BRAND NEW release from Simon Says Stamp called Friendly Frolic that is SOOOO incredibly fun! It is jam packed with fun goodies - make sure and check them all out HERE!

I have a ton of projects to share over the next couple days with the new release items - and will be part of a fun 2 day blog hop that starts on Friday with giveaways at every stop - so make sure and check back then! But first, I thought I'd kick of the release with this card:

This beautiful image is part of a fun new stamp set called Plantiful Puns - which is full of tons of fun "punny" sentiments as the name implies, but also some super lovely images! I used a sentiment from another new set, Sketch Lotus Flowers, to create a simple and elegant card.

I started off by stamping my image on kraft paper with SSS Barely Beige Ink, then coloring with my Polychromos Pencils. Since I used my MISTI to stamp the image, I was able to restamp over the top and heat emboss in gold once it was colored. I used a simple embossing pen and a ruler to draw the line going down to my hanging terrarium, and heat embossed that in gold as well.

Finished off by stamping my sentiment and heat embossing with white, added some distress inking around the edges with Antique Linen Distress Ink, and then masked off my image and sentiment with post it tape and added some white paint splatters to finish it off. Here is a closer look at the elegant gold shine on this card:

Cute Shaker Card by my Niece!

Hello! I'm dropping by today with a super special card to share - created by my sweet 12 year old niece, Jozalyn, for the special Simon Says Stamp Kids Summer Vacation Challenge! She has been my cardmaking buddy for quite some time - whenever I have extra or leftover crafty supplies (which is OFTEN!) - I try to pass them on to her whenever possible! We spent a bit of time together last week, since she wanted me to teach her how to make a shaker - this is her very first one:

Is there anything more fun than a shaker card? She mixed and matched fun products from lots of different companies - I won't even try to begin to list them all out this time! Haha! If you have any questions about anything, feel free to ask, and I can find out which is which.

You can find the challenge info HERE - there are still a couple days left to join in! The theme is Anything Goes with some Sparkle:

Thanks so much for stopping by! If you want to leave comments, I will make sure and pass on to her each and every one. I know she will love reading them! :)

Have a wonderful day!!!

LID July Release Day 3 - Red, White, and Black with Circles

Hello! Today is the final day of the Blog Hop to celebrate the BRAND NEW July release at Lil' Inker Designs! While this is a smaller release than some others, it is packed with lots of cuteness!!!! You can find the entire new release HERE!

You should have arrived here from Chrissy Larson - if you stopped by here you can refer to the entire blog hop at the bottom so you don't miss a stop or a chance to win the amazing giveaway. I also have links to all the new products I used on today's cards!

Today I have pair of cards to share using the new Perfect Palette Die two ways combined with a background I created with alcohol inks!

For the first card, I die cut the pieces, then lined up the circles on white cardstock, using the orginal die cut as a guide. I mounted them one at a time with foam adhesive, then lifted off the other piece. Perfect circle background!

I finished this bold card off very simply by die cutting the Hello Word Die from a previous release two times from black cardstock, layering together with a glue pen, and then coating with a good layer of Glossy Accents for additional shine!

For the second card, I used the original piece, mounted with foam adhesive, and stamped one of the circle images from Spiffy Spots Stamp Set into the circles, rotating it a quarter turn each time so that it would appear more random, even though it was the same circle image.

I stamped a sentiment in one of the circles, also from Spiffy Spots stamp set.

So there you go! A simple and quick way to create two cards with one die, and get a fun different effect both times!

LID July Release Day 2 - Feel Better Cuties

Hello! Welcome to Day 2 of the BRAND NEW July release at Lil' Inker Designs! While this is a smaller release than some others, it is packed with lots of cuteness!!!! You can find the entire new release HERE!

Today I'm using the super cute new Animal Doctors Stamp set to create a fun get well card!

These little critters are darling - and sure to cheer someone up! I colored them up with Copics, then die cut with the Coordinating Dies. I created a frame using the negative die cut of my card from yesterday using Quilted Stitched So Stylish Die - couldn't bear to waste the other half of the die cut!

I mounted the colored critters with foam adhesive, then added some sentiments from the set as well, trimming some of them apart and mounting with foam adhesive as well.
