Crafting with Compassion - Neat and Tangled Challenge

Good morning! These days I'm usually SOOO busy keeping up with all my Design Team work, that I rarely have a chance to play along with challenges. In my early days of cardmaking I LOVED joining challenges - they helped grow me in my cardmaking in so many ways! So I kind of have a special place in my heart for them. Recently, however, I saw a challenge that I knew I needed to play along with!

Neat and Tangled is hosting a "Crafting with Compassion" Challenge - a challenge all about helping others. It's a chance to combine cardmaking with supporting a charity or cause that is near and dear to your heart. If you know me, you know why I couldn't resist playing along with this one!

I'm going to tell you a little bit about an AMAZING ministry called Sister Connection. It is a SUPER long story - so I'll keep it a bit brief (you can always read more HERE if you're interested). If you've ever wondered about my blog name, Houses Built of Cards, here is how my blog got it's name:

When I began making cards several years ago (before I started my blog), I quickly started to see cards piling up more quickly than I could use or send them. I went to one craft fair, and paid more for my table than I sold in the day. About this time, a woman from Sister Connection came to our church, and told stories of the women and children in Burundi, Africa that had been left widows and orphans in the aftermath of the civil war there that killed an enormous number of the men in the country. Many of the widows had taken in additional children, and were also homeless. There were opportunities to sponsor the widows and their families on a monthly basis (which we did) - as well as chances to build homes for them at the staggeringly low price of $500 (over the years this has increased to $650 - but still, WOW!). My young daughters were particularly taken with the stories they heard, and it wasn't long until the idea hit me to sell my cards by donation toward building houses in Burundi. And just like that, when I started my blog, the name was born! It has been an incredibly humbling and amazing thing to watch how God has used this ministry - seriously! I haven't kept a complete count - I know the early years were a little slow starting. But by 2016 I was able to send in money in one year to build 4 homes - and this year I have already received enough from the purchase of my cards for THREE homes! I don't have words to say what an amazing blessing it is to be able to give in this small way.

You can find all the info on the challenge HERE on the Neat and Tangled Blog:

For my card to share for the challenge, I used a mix of MANY different Neat and Tangled Sets! I started off with two colors of Distress Oxide ink and the Hexastar Stencil to create a background.

I then stamped, colored, and die cut images from Wild Ones and Lumberjack Love to create my scene, mounting it all with foam adhesive. I added a sentiment using a combination of Itty Bitty Welcoming Committee and Wild Ones.

Go Wild Party Animal - Neat and Tangled Birthday Party

Good morning! I'm sharing another card today with a new birthday set from Neat and Tangled - I just adore this darling Wild Ones stamp set, and wanted to squeeze all the cute critters from it onto one card!

I used my MISTI and stamped them on watercolor paper, leaving it looking like they are peeking into the center of the card, then added my sentiment in the middle. Colored them in with watercoors, and added some accents with a white gel pen. Finished off by matting with different colors of cardstock!

Galaxy and Giraffe - Neat and Tangled New Release

Good morning! Have you been seeing all the darling projects with some of the new Neat and Tangled Birthday Release?!?!? Well...last week I made a few galaxy backgrounds while at a friend's house crafting, so I decided to put one of them to use with that darling little giraffe from the new Wild Ones stamp set!

(((NOTE: I have had MANY requests to do a video tutorial for galaxy backgrounds - I promise I will do that soon! I didn't get it done before getting my 3 year old niece for the week, so filming videos is a little tougher right now - but I plan on working on it next week for sure if possible!)))

I am so addicted to galaxy backgrounds right now - SOOO fun! I don't know about anyone else, but I feel like I am totally screwing them up the entire time I am doing the watercoloring. Then, you get to the part where you add the splatters of white and gold - and all of a sudden it is AMAZING!

I colored the giraffe from Wild Ones with Warm Gray Copics so it would look like it was standing in the dark in the shadows, and die cut it with the coordinating Wild Ones Coordinating Dies. I added some stars from part of Seeing Stars Dies, and a sentiment from Origami Map heat embossed on a strip of white cardstock. The giraffe is mounted with foam adhesive, as well as the sentiment. A few white gel pen accents on the giraffe finish this card off!

CardMaker and Grafix Arts Blog Hop

Good morning! This morning I am participating in another fun blog hop - this time with the CardMaker Blog Design Team and Grafix Arts! Each of the Cardmaker DT members got a package of goodies from Grafix Arts to play with - I used a couple of those items to make my card below:

The main thing used was the fun package of Shrink Film! I hadn't had a chance to use that before, and it was so fun! Kind of felt a little like magic I have to tell you! This embellishment on the front of my card is the beautiful Neat and Tangled Heart Wreath stamp - that is usually much larger! I stamped it with Stazon Ink on the Shrink Film, which basically feels like a piece of acetate. Then I zapped it with my heat gun to shrink it down - worked just as good as putting it in the oven, and much quicker than taking time to heat it up! Look at the photo below to see how THICK it ended up! Such a fun embellishment!

I also used some of the vellum from Grafix Arts on my card - see the torn edge of it ticked under the strip of pattern paper on the front of my card? My pattern paper is from a new Crate Paper pad - I'm a sucker for pretty floral paper, and all the better when I can leave more if it showing like this!

I attached my Shrink Film embellishment with a couple tiny dots of Ranger adhesive to a small die cut circle, added some coordinating enamel dots, and a bit of jute twine to finish off my card.

Here is the entire blog hop line-up so you can follow along and see all the fun inspiration!

I Choose You - Cute Squirrel!

Good morning! I'm stopping by this morning with a rare card that I made just for fun, not for any DT work! I couldn't resist some of the new Neat and Tangled cuties that released recently, and when they showed up and I had a little window of no looming deadlines, I figured I better get them inked up quickly while I had the chance!

I also wanted to play along with the current Little Tangles Challenge - Anything Goes:

I stamped and heat embossed in white the beautiful Floral Heart stamp set on some green cardstock, then cut it out with the coordinating dies. I used a darker green Copic marker on it to add some depth and detail.

I stamped the darling squirrel from My Favorite Nut on kraft paper, colored in with Copics, and added some detail with a white gel pen, then die cut with the coordinating dies. Heat embossed the sentiment on a strip of black cardstock, added some ink splatters to a white card base, then mounted all the images with foam adhesive and added a twist of jute twine to finish it off!
