Pinkfresh September Challenge - Watercolor/Mixed Media

Pinkfresh Studios is kicking off a BRAND NEW September Challenge: Watercolor and Mixed Media - paired of course with the option a fun color combo! I hope you'll come play along for a chance to win some amazing prizes - you can enter cards OR scrapbook layouts!!!

Here is the challenge info and inspiration photo:

Mixed Media is something I tend to struggle with a bit actually, so I thought I would stretch myself and try to create a card with a total mixed media feel AND use Pinkfresh's Liquid Watercolors as well! I ended up with two cards, kind of on accident...read on to find out how!

So, this first card, I die cut the new Modern Bloom Die from white cardstock, then used it as a stencil to add embossing paste over some watercolor paper. Once that dried nice and thoroughly, I mixed some Liquid Watercolors to create my own custom colors to match the challenge graphics, and colored over the top of that background. I let it dry a bit, but not quite long enough it turned out. Then I made what I thought was a mistake...I added some white paint splatters, some Perfect Pearl splatters, and some Licorice Liquid Watercolor splatters. I didn't realize that nothing was dry yet, and I didn't like how the black spread and didn't stay crisp as I planned! I thought I was going to throw the entire thing away, but I set it aside to dry, just in case it looked better once it dried. So...I moved on to my Plan B!

I didn't have enough time to redo all the steps on the other card, so this time I created a watercolor wash background with the same colors, then once that dried, I did the same stenciling with embossing paste, but this time OVER the watercolor. This gave a totally different effect - and I love the crisp detail you get on the background, but I did kind of like the fun texture from the first card too!

As it turned out, once they dried, I liked and ended up using both of them to make similar cards, but with a bit of a different feel! I added some die cut Leafy Branches - the first card I used vellum for the die cutting, and the second card I used white cardstock.

Finished off with a sentiment from Floral Vase stamp set and a few jewels from the Essentials: Jewels Mix, just because I can't resist!
